19th Annual Cathedral Chorister Festival at Christ Church Cathedral

The 19th Annual Christ Church Cathedral Chorister Festival was held this past weekend at the Cathedral, under guest director Michael Kleinschmidt, Canon Musician at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle. The Festival, hosted by Canon Dr. Michael Velting, Michael Gebhart, Assistant Organist and Choirmaster, and the Cathedral Senior Choristers, welcomed a total of 40 Choristers from the following parishes in addition to the Cathedral:

St. George’s Episcopal Church, Nashville - Dr. Woosug Kang, Director of Music, Richard Gray, organ scholar

Church of the Holy Communion, Memphis - Dr. David Perry Ouzts, Minister of Music, Ellen Koziel, Director of Choristers

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta - Caitlin Downing, Music Associate and Director of Choristers

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church - Chattanooga - Dr. Keith Reas, Organist and Choirmaster

St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Signal Mountain - Philip Newton, Director of Music Ministries

The Choristers spent four hours on Saturday rehearsing with Mr. Kleinschmidt and Mr. Gebhart, fine-tuning the music they’d prepared with their own directors, which was to be sung at Cathedral liturgies on Sunday. They also had meals and recreation time together.

The weekend culminated gloriously with the Festival Choir presenting music of S.S. Wesley and Barry Rose at Holy Eucharist on Sunday morning, and music of Herbert Sumsion, Mary Plumstead, and George Dyson at Choral Evensong, attended by Bishop Bauerschmidt.

A fantastic Festival finished off with a reception following Evensong.
