In the Diocese of Tennessee, the policy is for each employee, clergy and lay, working over 20 hours per week to receive $40,000 of group term life which is paid for by the employer. This is in addition to the $100,000 worth of coverage received by clergy by virtue of being active in the Pension Fund. For lay employees with a defined benefit pension plan, it is in addition to $50,000 of group term life benefits. Lay employees covered by a defined contribution pension plan do not have group term life coverage as part of being enrolled in that pension plan.
Administrators must enroll new hires within the first 60 days of the hire date. This Group Term Life Fact Sheet explains the benefit provided and paid for by the employer.
