Bishop’s Statement on Child Separation Policy

At one point in his ministry Jesus placed a child in the midst of his disciples. In response to the question “Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”, Jesus told them “Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” (Matt. 18:4-5).

Christianity was known from its earliest days for its distinctive care for children and the weakest members of the human family. In doing so our spiritual forebears were walking in the steps of the Master in a culture that saw children as expendable. The Christian witness of welcome for these humble ones transformed the society of that time and continues to challenge our own today.

I urge all members of the church to bear these truths in mind as they respond to government policy, in particular at this time in regard to the separation of children from their families at the borders of our country.
